Itinerary

DAY 1KAIROUAN THE HOLY CITY & THE BIZANTIN RUINS

Pick up from your selected hotel in Tunis or Hammamet or Sousse to Kairouan the fourth holy city of Islam and first Arab-Muslim city in Tunisia considered world heritage. Arrival to Kairoaun and visit of the Aghlabid basins, old water reserves that fed the entire city. Visit of the Abu Zoumaa Al Balaoui Mausoleum called Sid Sahib or the Barber. Visit of the Great Mosque of Okba, that took the name of its founder. Panoramic visit to the ancient mosque called “Three Doors Mosque”. Visit of the Medina with its souks and narrow streets. Possibility to visit of a carpet weaving workshop. Visit to a traditional pastry workshop to taste Makroukh, typical pastry made of dates and honey. In the afternoon, departure to Sbeitla, visit to the ruins of the ancient byzantine city Sufeitula with its well-preserved monuments such as the Dioclitien arc, the Baths, the Theater, the basilicas, the Forum, the Capitol, the baptistery…etc. Drive to Tozeur the capital of Bled El Jerid « The land of palms », overnight at the DIAR ABOU HABIBI Eco-Lodge, a surprising Lodge in the heart of Tozeur Oasis. Its beautiful rooms designed as a cabin built on stilts in the palm grove, perfectly equipped and beautifully decorated by combining luxury and traditions of the region with an exceptional comfort. Dinner not included (served à la carte and paid for on site).

DAY 2: WONDERFUL DAY THROUGH THE OASES

After breakfast, departure to discover the mountain oases on the Atlas mountain range. Arrival to Chebika oasis and wander tour through the oasis with its stunning landscapes and natural water springs. Drive to Tamerza oasis and visit of the waterfalls and the old abandoned village with wonderful views. We continue to Mides oasis located right on the Tunisian-Algerian border, visit of the famous Canyon shooting location of the famous film « The English Patient ». After lunch, departure to the oasis of Tozeur, visit to workshop of traditional Brick of clay used to decorate the façades of the houses of Tozeur. Drive to Nafta, the second town in « The land of palms », visit to the famous oasis La Corbeille « the basket » to admire the palm trees and the ancient irrigation system in the oasis. Visit to the old city to admire the typical architecture of the houses with their coated-clay-brick facades. Return to Tozeur, dinner and overnight at DAR TOZEUR hotel.

DAY 3:THE SALT LAKE & THE SAHARA DESERT

After a tasty typical breakfast, visit to the ancient city of Tozeur with its house decorated with traditional bricks made of clay and narrow streets covered by palm trunks. Visit to the Museum of palm trees EDEN PALM, where we will attend a tasting session of products derived from dates such as the different types of organic jam. Then, departure to Douz crossing Chott El Jerid, the largest Salt Lake in Tunisia, short break for photos admiring unusual landscapes of the lake. Arrival to Douz the city called «the gate of the Sahara» and possibility to make a camel ride in the sand dunes by the sunset (Optional). Typical lunch in Douz with local specialities. In the afternoon, drive to Tamezret Berber village by crossing the beginning of the Dhahar massif. Arrival at Tamezret, superb Berber  village among the very rare villages still inhabited in southern Tunisia, built on a hill at the top of which we find an old mosque and a Moorish cafe meeting place for the old people of the village to play cards and domino. Visit to the small traditional museum of Berber dresses in Tamezret. Accommodation at the L’AUBERGE DE TAMEZRET, a luxury boutique hotel with its beautiful cave rooms carved into the rock, where you will be warmly welcomed by the owner who will give you the keys to your super-equipped cave according to the standards of a 5 stars hotel. Upon request, we can organize a Berber cooking class before dinner to learn how to cook the best recipes of local cuisine. Sweet evening and accommodation at L’AUBERGE DE TAMEZRET. (Dinner is not includedbut served à la carte and payed locally.

DAY 4:THE BERBER CAVE DWELLERS AND THE GLADIATORS OF THE AMPHITHEATER

After a tasty and rich breakfast of local product, departure to Matmata, Berber village unique of its kind known for its underground cave houses and its lunar landscape. Visit of a Berber troglodyte house to discover the amazing Berber architecture and the daily life. Visit to Sidi Driss, a very famous dwell cave hotel in Matmata and Star Wars filming location ( Lars Farm Episodes II & IV). Drive to Gabes, coastal oasis and a maritime oasis, visit to «Jara», the Spice and Henna market. After lunch we continue to El Djem city, visit to the famous Roman amphitheater ranked 3rd in the world with a capacity of 35000 spectators. Drive to Monastir, visit to the mausoleum of Habib Bourguiba, the first president and founder of the Tunisian Republic. Departure to Sousse, the capital of the Sahel, visit to the Medina declared World Heritage with its traditional souks. Drive to Tunis, drop off in your selected hotel, end of our services.

How is the Troglodyte Lodge in Tamezret?

Auberge de Tamezret is located in Tamezret and features a bar, a garden and a terrace. Among the facilities of this property are a restaurant, a 24-hour front desk and room service, along with free WiFi. The accommodation provides a concierge service, and currency exchange for guests. The rooms are dug in the mountain as a typical troglodyte house,  every room comes with a wardrobe. The private bathroom is equipped with a shower, a hairdryer and free toiletries.
