Itinerary

DAY 1:ARRIVAL TO TUNISIA

Arrival at Tunis airport, assistance by the tour guide and transfer to the Medina of Tunis. Accommodation at DAR EL JELD Hotel & Spa, a 5 stars Boutique Hotel in the heart of the Medina of Tunis.

DAY 2: KAIROUAN THE CITY OF MOSQUES

After breakfast, departure to Kairouan the fourth holy city of Islam and first Arab-Muslim city in Tunisia considered world heritage. Arrival to Kairouan and visit to the Aghlabid basins, old water reserves that fed the entire city during centuries. Visit to the Abu Zoumaa Al Balaoui Mausoleum called Sid Sahib or the Barber. Visit of the Great Mosque of Okba. Visit to the mausoleum of Sidi Abid El Ghariani. Panoramic visit to the mosque called “Three doors mosque”. Visit of the Medina with its souks and narrow streets. Visit of a carpet weaving workshop (optional). After lunch, departure to Sbeitla, visit to the ruins of the ancient byzantine city Sufeitula with its well-preserved monuments such as the Dioclitien arc, the Baths, the Theater, the basilicas, the Forum, the Capitol, the baptistery…etc. Departure to Tozeur the capital of Bled El Jerid « The land of palms »,overnight at DAR TOZEUR, very charming Boutique Hotel in the Heart of the ancient city of Tozeur with a typical architectural style remembering the Arabian Nights, dinner is not included, it’s served a la carte and paid on site.

DAY 3:A DAY THROUGH THE MAGICAL OASES & STAR WARS SET LOCATION

After breakfast, departure to discover the mountain oases on the Atlas mountain range. Arrival to Chebika oasis and wander tour through the oasis with its stunning landscapes and natural water springs. Drive to Tamerza oasis and visit of the waterfalls and the old abandoned village with wonderful views. We continue to Mides oasis located right on the Tunisian-Algerian border, visit of the famous Canyon shooting location of the famous film « The English Patient ». After lunch, drive to Nafta, the second town in « The land of palms », visit to the famous oasis La Corbeille « the basket » to admire the palm trees and the ancient irrigation system in the oasis. We continue to the dunes of Ong Ejmel, Set location of Star Wars movies (Mos Esp). Return to Tozeur, overnight at DAR TOZEUR charm hotel, dinner is not included, it’s served a la carte and paid on site.

DAY 4:THE SALT LAKE & A MEMORABLE OVERNIGHT IN THE DESERT

After breakfast, visit of to the old city of Tozeur with its houses decorated with traditional bricks made of clay and narrow streets covered by palm trunks. Departure to the oasis of Tozeur, visit to workshop of traditional Brick of clay used to decorate the façades of the houses of Tozeur. Drive to Douz with a break at Chott El Jerid, the largest Salt Lake in Tunisia with breathtaking views. Arrival to Douz, the city named “The Gate of the Sahara”; typical lunch of local specialties. In the afternoon, we continue in 4X4 vehicle crossing the dunes of the Erg Oriental, a hugedesert of fine ocher-colored sand to admire a spectacular sunset in the Tunisia Sahara Desert. Later, you can see our cook preparing sand bread, then you’ll enjoy a tasty dinner in thedesert in a romantic atmosphere around a campfire. Accommodation in private tents at a luxury Saharan camp in the desert and wonderful night under the starry sky where the main constellations are visible to the naked eye..

DAY 5:COOKING CLASS IN A BERBER VILLAGE

After a sweet and quite night in the desert, sure you’ll begin your day with one of the most spectacular sunrises of the planet on the sand dunes. After a tasty breakfast, drive in 4X4 vehicle crossing giant sand dunes of the desert  to Douz, visit of the traditional market of Babouche, traditional shoes made of Camel leather. Possibility to make some excursions in the desert by Camel riding or Quad Biking (Optional) In the afternoon, drive to Tamezret Berber village by crossing the beginning of the Dhahar massif. Arrival at Tamezret, superb Berber Crest village among the very rare villages still inhabited in southern Tunisia, built on a hill at the top of which we find an old mosque and a Moorish cafe meeting place for the old people of the village to play cards and domino. Visit to the small traditional museum of Berber dresses in Tamezret. Accommodation at the L’AUBERGE DE TAMEZRET, a luxury boutique hotel with its beautiful cave rooms carved into the rock, where you will be warmly welcomed by the owner who will give you the keys to your super-equipped cave according to the standards of a 5 stars hotel. Upon request, we can organize a Berber cooking class before dinner to learn how to cook the best recipes of local cuisine. Sweet evening and accommodation at L’AUBERGE DE TAMEZRET. (Dinner is not included but served à la carte and payed locally.

DAY 6:CAVE DWELLERS AND KSARS

After a tasty and rich breakfast of local product, departure to Matmata, Berber village unique of its kind known for its underground cave houses and its lunar landscape. Visit to a Berber troglodyte house to discover the amazing Berber architecture and the daily life. Visit of Sidi Driss, a very famous troglodyte hotel in Matmata and filming location of StarWars movie ( Lars Farm Episodes II & IV). We continue crossing the Dhahar massif with a panoramic stop in Toujane, superb Berber village nestled in a mountainous landscape and offering a breathtaking view. Departure to the visit to Ksar Hadada, former granary used by Berber tribes, and filming location for the episode «The threat of the Ghost» from the movie «Star Wars». Drive to Chenini the crest village of sublime beauty with its beautiful houses excavated in the rocks, wander tour to the village till the ancient Ksar on the pick of the mountain and the small white mosque. Then, you enjoy a delicious lunch of local Berber culinary art. In the afternoon, drive to Ksar Ezzahra, former Berber granary very well preserved with its Ghorfas beautifully superimposed used to store aliments. The we continue to Djreba island crossing the roman causeway, a seven km road which connects the island with the continent. Arrival to Erriadh village on Djerba, overnight at DAR DHIAFA Hotel, a wonderful Hotel Boutique with djerbian style offering charm and confort. Dinner is not included but served à la carte and payed locally.

DAY 7:DJERBA ISLAND & THE LOTUS EATERS

After a typical and tasty breakfast, visit to La Ghriba, one of the oldest Hebrew synagogues in the world and a place of pilgrimage of the Jewish community of Djerba (During the religious holidays of the Jewish community of Djerba, the visit of the synagogue will not be possible). Drive to Djerba and visit to Guellela, the famous pottery village with its underground clay quarries. Visit to museum of popular arts and traditions of Djerba Departure to Houmt-Souk, the capital of the island and visit to the ancient Spanish fortress, a real testimonial of the bloody conflicts that took place on the island between the Spanish and the Turkish.  Then you will enjoy typical lunch based on seafood to savour the culinary art of the island. In the afternoon, visit to Souk Errbaa, old traditional covered Market with many typical goods. Continue to the wild coast of the island till the mausoleum of Sidi Jmour where you enjoy stunning landscapes. Drive back to Erriadh village, overnight at DAR DHIAFA Hotel, dinner is not included but served à la carte and payed locally.

DAY 8:THE ROMAN AMPHITHEATER

After breakfast, drive to Gabes via the Ferry. Arrival and visit to “Jara”, the old spice market where you can find even pure Henna, a vegetable dye used by women at the Berber wedding. After lunch, drive to El Jem, visit the famous Roman amphitheater ranked 3rd in the world with a capacity of 35000 spectators. Departure to Monastir, visit to the  Ribat, ancient fortress from the 8th century. Visit to Habib Bourguiba mausoleum first president and founder of the Tunisian Republic Overnight at the fabulous Boutique DAR BENTI, nestled in the heaur of the Medina of Monastir, dinner is not included but served à la carte and payed locally.

DAY 9:THE COAST OF CARTHAGE & AND THE BLUE AND WHITE VILLAGE

After breakfast, drive to Tunis, visit to the National Bardo Museum, a former residence for the ottoman monarchs, this actually houses the largest collection of Roman mosaics in the world. Drive to the Medina of Tunis declared world heritage, wander to to discover the ancient monuments of the Medina and the traditional souks. Lunch on the way. In the afternoon, visit to the Carthage ruins, the ancient capital of the Punic Empire: the Tophet an ancient Punic sanctuary dedicate to Tanit and Baal Hamon the most worshipped Gods. Visit to ancient Punic harbours which housed the commercial and military fleet of Carthage. Visit to the ancient roman baths of Anthony.  Drive to Sidi Bou Saïd, the Moorish village with its beautiful houses painted in blue and white with their balconies typically decorated with arabesque. Accommodation at DAR EL JELD Hotel & Spa, a 5 stars Boutique Hotel in the heart of the Medina of Tunis.

DAY 10:END OF THE TRIP

Breakfast at the hotel and then departure to the airport for the return flight. End of our services.

How can I find you at the arrival airport in Tunisia?

What electrical voltage is used in Tunisia?

The electric current used in Tunisia is 220 V in the whole country including hotels.  The plugs used are double entry and identical to French plugs.

How is the Saharan camp?

The Saharan camp is located in the middle of the desert surrounded by giant dunes, the tents are individual and comfortable, they are equipped with beds, mattresses, sheets, pillows and blankets. Toilets and showers are private. 

Is it cold at night in the desert ?

In the Tunisian Sahara Desertn theres no big diffrence between the tempreture during the day and that of the night but in winter the temperature  could decrease to 2  degrees. Il would be better to wear a pullover with a Jacket. But un summer time it’s hot  at night.

Are drinks available in the desert ?

At the Saharan camp, you will find fresh soft drinks, beer and Tunisian wine available at the bar or served at the table during dinner
