Chenini is an ancient berber village constructed into the tops of two mountains only separated by a white washed mosque in the middle that joins them. Located about 18 km from Tataouine, this picturesque village dates back to the 12th century, while much of this ancient village is in ruins. The inhabitants still live in caves within the walls of these mountains. You could easily convince yourself that you just traveled hundreds of years back in time as you watch traditionally clothed Berber men and women walk to the mosque to pray, or lead their donkey through the narrow paths carrying supplies. Just behind the village is located the famous Mosque of the Seven Sleepers is a strange place. Unusually long tombs dominate the graveyard near the mosque.
