Itinerary of the safari

DAY 1: BERBER KSARS AND A MEMORABLE OVERNIGHT IN THE SAHARA DESERT

  • Early departure in 4X4 from your hotel towards Tataouine city via the Roman causeway.
  • Panoramic break at the small salt lake ”Sobkhet El Melah” which offers a beautiful whitish landscape.
  • Continue towards Tataouine, the famous city which sheltered the battalion of the foreign legion and the famous “Bat of AF”.
  • Visit the Science Village which houses a Jurassic Park and testifies the prehistoric wealth of the Tataouine since the Tertiary era with the exhibition of several fossils and dinosaur bones.
  • Explore the city center and the traditional marketplace with typical products such as Babouches (shoes made from camel leather) and Burnous (traditional coat of lamb’s wool or camel hair with cap).
  • Drive to the world of Ksours (plural of Ksar), former collective granaries built by the Berber tribes for the storage of wheat and food of all kinds, with their beautiful Ghorfas vaulted and beautifully superimposed.
  • Visit of Ksar Ouled Soltane, the most prestigious of all the granaries of the region and very well preserved with its Ghorfas which form up to five floors.
  • Then, go through the Dhahar Mountains that offer beautiful landscapes reminiscent of the Wild West.
  • Departure to Chenini, a crest village with its superb houses dug in the rocks and its Citadel-Ksar which overhangs the whole village.
  • When the guided visit to the village finishes, a typical lunch to savor the delights of the Berber culinary art is waiting for you.
  • After lunch, panoramic stop at Guermessa, a wonderful Berber crest village with its sunny landscapes.
  • Departure to the Saharan Zmela camp crossing caravan trails.
  • Arrival at Zmela desert, where you could enjoy an amazing sunset over the sand dunes of ocher sand.
  • Dinner and overnight in a well-equipped Desert camp.
  • Beautiful evening between the dunes under a wonderfully starry sky.

DAY 2: THE TROGLODYTE CAVE DWELLERS IN MATMATA

  • After a spectacular sunrise over the ocher sand dunes, you’ll enjoy a delicious breakfast, then drive towards Ksar Ghilane, a superb Saharan oasis at the beginning of the edge of the Erg oriental desert.
  • Arrival and free time to enjoy a beautiful swim in its natural spring.
  • Possibility to participate in a camel ride or Quad drive (optional) on the sand dunes till the ancient Roman fort of Tisavar located a few kilometers from the oasis.
  • Drive to Matmata, a famous Berber village of unique beauty known for its dwell cave houses and lunar landscape.
  • Visit a troglodyte house to discover lifestyle among the Berbers.
  • Then comes lunch, we cross the Dhahar massif with a panoramic stop in Toujane, a superb Berber village hidden between the mountains, with a possibility to visit an underground oil mill (open only during the harvesting season).
  • We continue to Ksar Hallouf and visit the ancient granary.
  • Typical lunch at the oasis ksar Hallaouf.
  • Return to Djerba, drop off in your hotel, end of our services.

How is the Desert camp?

The Desert camp is located in the middle of the desert surrounded by giant dunes, the tents are individual and comfortable, they are equipped with beds, mattresses, sheets, pillows and blankets. Toilets and showers are shared with hot water in winter.

Is it cold at night in the desert ?

In the Tunisian Sahara Desert there’s no big difference between the temperature during the day and that of the night but in winter the temperature  could decrease to 2  degrees. Il would be better to wear a pullover with a Jacket. But in summer time it’s hot  at night.

Are drinks available in the desert ?

At the Desert camp, you will find fresh soft drinks, beer and Tunisian wine available at the bar or served at the table during dinner

voyage inoubliable pour un dépaysement total au désert tunisien avec nos enfants. Nous avons bien aimé la nuit sous tente en plein désert et les villages troglodytiques Chenini et Matmata. A refaire!
